English Premier League: Things to watch in Liverpool’s 2018-19 season

It was a comfortable win for Liverpool this evening against West Ham at Anfield, with the Reds prevailing 4-0.

Liverpool got their league campaign underway with a comprehensive win over West Ham at Anfield.

Mark Hughes's side looked the more likely to score after the break but England worldwide Hart, who joined Burnley last week from Manchester City, produced some fine saves.

"I've spent a lot of the summer being asked about what we expect of ourselves this season and what a fair expectation is from others. This season we will see the best from him". That's how it is, they know that and we know that and we have to be ready week in, week out for all the different challenges.

Liverpool eased to victory with Sadio Mane scoring twice between efforts from Mohamed Salah and substitute Daniel Sturridge.

"And I'll work very hard to make sure it's a good deal for Liverpool too, which is more important". Naby is in because he's a really good footballer.

"We not only have nine new players, but three or four players who were not completely fit in pre-season".

Liverpool started the 2018-19 Premier League season looking a bit like last season's team. You can not create that situation, that's what I mean when I said you can not test the test before you have the test. For that... the start was good.

Liverpool went in to cruise control for the majority of the second half, with Alisson not having a significant test to prove his £65 million price tag in the whole game as West Ham's attacking additions of Felipe Anderson and Jack Wilshere were nowhere to be seen.

Speaking of the defensive situation ahead of the game, the Liverpool manager said in his pre-match press conference, "Dejan will not be available for the weekend, that's how it is".

"I also stated after Coutinho's sale that the extraordinary fee presented an opportunity - for one summer at least - to outspend the rest of the Premier League".

"Hopefully we are going to do something special this year".

"I thought Van Dijk was a good player at Southampton, but I didn't think he was worth £75m, and I didn't think he would have the impact on Liverpool's defence that he's had".

Madrid also outclassed Liverpool in midfield in Kiev, as they have done to most sides in winning three straight Champions League titles thanks to the talent of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. When you lose 4-0 you can not have excuses.

"The second part, what those outside of our club think, I really could not care 0.1 per cent about because it's not important".

There were components to Pellegrini's set-up that looked promising at times in the first half and Marko Arnautovic wasted two decent chances, but the manner of their defending and their approach play in attack will be a cause for concern even after only one game.
