California's Holy Fire prompts state of emergency

Cal Fire says the firefighter was assigned to the Butte Unit that is assigned to the Carr Fire burning near Redding.

The man accused of deliberately starting the latest fast-moving blaze faces life in prison if convicted of arson and other charges.

Clark's arrest marks the second such detention in two weeks.

"I also want to remind you not to panic", he said.

"For us it's disappointing, because he is just a scourge on this canyon", Milligan told local media.

The next morning, Milligan said, he got a mysterious text from an unknown number: "911 call sheriff".

"Remember when Gandalf said, 'If there is a dragon in the neighborhood, include it in your plans?'" Milligan asked, paraphrasing the wizard in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit". When the commissioner ordered bail to remain at $1 million, Clark shouted that he could easily afford it.

Forrest Gordon Clark, 51, who owns a cabin in Holy Jim Canyon, was arrested earlier this week after a standoff with police and charged with arson, making criminal threats and resisting arrest.

"Arson is a awful crime that destroys dreams", she said in a press conference.

Authorities say he intentionally started the fire on Monday after a decade-long dispute with neighbours.

Before his arrest, Clark told a reporter he had been asleep at the time and had nothing to with the fire. The blaze has quickly spread to Riverside County and it remains only 5% contained, U.S. Forest Service officials said Friday.

Crews continued aerial and ground firefighting efforts Wednesday, with 16 air tankers, 10 helicopters and additional fixed-wing aircraft assisting ground crews, who were working to build bulldozer lines, authorities said.

But they are hopeful that weather conditions will improve when temperatures fall over the weekend.

More than 21,000 people have been evacuated in and around the city of Lake Elsinore, where flames and billowing smoke rose into the sky at the edge of the city of 60,000 near the Santa Ana Mountains.

And authorities said things will only get worse, with the area forecast to have temperatures in the 90s and gusty winds of up to 25 miles per hour.

The fire near Lake Elsinore is devouring brushy foothills, ridgetops and canyons. The 181,000-acre Carr Fire has destroyed almost 1,100 homes.

Spitzer added that his constituents are "scared" and "fleeing their homes".

"They're leaving property behind".

Fire officials warned residents to heed evacuation orders.

California's biggest blaze, the Mendocino Complex fire in Northern California, is now the state's largest on record.

The Complex fire is actually made up of two fires: the smaller River Fire, which has burned 48,920 acres, and the larger Ranch Fire, which has burned 255,482.

An estimated 700 firefighters were battling the blaze. The deadly fire has been burning for more than two weeks and consumed 177,450 acres as of Thursday morning. Dry conditions and an increase in dead trees are fueling the fires, which have left more than 800,000 acres of scorched Earth in their path and several people, including firefighters, dead.
