On the eve of the new season, which starts with United's clash against Leicester, Mourinho also claimed that finishing second last season, 19 points behind champions Manchester City, was "one of the greatest achievements" of his career.

"My view is that, first of all, it is hard for me to believe we finished second because when I listen, when I read - not much but sometimes I do - you [the media] are capable of making people that finish second look like they were relegated, and people who win nothing, finish below us, you make them look like serial winners. "They are available", Guardiola said. "[Sergio] Romero, [Antonio] Valencia, Marcos Rojo, [Diogo] Dalot, Ander Herrera, [Nemanja] Matic [are injured] and I think that's it".

Marcus Rashford, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku made slightly early returns so could be involved on Friday, perhaps helping to boost the mood of a manager who has looked downbeat for much of the summer.

"Is hard for me to understand, to feel, to believe we finish second".

Mourinho has won three Premier League titles with Chelsea and two Champions League trophies as Porto and Inter Milan manager.

The Red Devils coach has cut a sullen figure throughout pre-season with the former Chelsea boss unable to hide his dissatisfaction with Brazil global midfielder Fred being his sides only high profile signing. What happened last season, we have learned and we know what to do.
