Liverpool boss Klopp: Big spending always going to happen

Liverpool boss Klopp: Big spending always going to happen

"The champions are Manchester City, they did not lose any players and brought in Riyad Mahrez, that does not make them weaker, we saw the Chelsea game and saw and they were impressive", he said.

"Why should we do that?"

While City have not spent as much as Liverpool in this window, they have been among the biggest spenders in the English top-flight for a few years now and a majority of their squad looks likely to remain the same in the years to come.

Liverpool's summer business means optimism is high that a first Premier League title could be on its way to Merseyside.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's campaign opener at home to West Ham on Sunday, Klopp stressed that his side's summer spending does not guarantee contention. "That's the plan - that we really go for it".

"We have to be more consistent, we know that".

Jurgen Klopp revealed on Friday morning that Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan are both out of the weekend's game while fellow centre-halves Joe Gomez and Joel Matip will be assessed at Melwood.

"We did not reach anything yet, we have been in finals and if we get there again we should try to win it".

Klopp however pointed out that there could be further departures from Anfield, with the transfer window still open for major leagues in Spain, France, Italy and Germany. "But it is clear things will happen", he said.

"More clinical in the right moments, more aggressive in the right moments".

"The players know I have to choose one starting XI, but also they know that if during the whole season you don't have a strong squad and just a team, it can be very hard to be successful". We need to improve everything.

"It is hard for us and the other teams too".

This has raised expectations for a title challenge in 2018/19, but after City's record-breaking 100-point tally last season the obstacles are vast.

"In the moment someone thinks we reached already a point then that is when you start disappointing yourself and the people around you".
