Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expresses grief over death of M Karunanidhi

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expresses grief over death of M Karunanidhi

The circular from the Government's Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan states that since there are many cases against allocating spaces for political leaders' memorial at Marina are ongoing in the Madras High Court, allocating space for Karunanidhi's memorial at the same site will create legal issues and hence the request can not be accommodated. Karunanidhi has never, in his entire life, lost a single assembly election!

Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond.

Speaking to the media, a DMK spokesperson said that the party will visit the residence of the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court and move the petition on Tuesday evening.

Karunanidhi was admitted to Kauvery hospital in Chennai following a drop in blood pressure on July 28.

"My thoughts are with the family and the countless supporters of Karunanidhi Ji in this hour of grief". Lot of supporters were seen in tears as they expressed their pain on the deteriorating health of their leader. Shops in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu were also closed today and police security was beefed up across the state.

Tributes have poured in from around India, a clear indication of the stature of the Tamil leader on the federal scene. Here is a brief history of his compelling, and equally engaging, journey from M Karunanidhi to Kalaignar Karunanidhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is expected to attend the funeral, tweeted: "Deeply saddened by the passing away of Kalaignar Karunanidhi". He was one of the senior most leaders of India.

Mr Karunanidhi was born in 1924.

Before the 1996 assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth had famously commented "even God can't save Tamil Nadu" if Jayalalithaa's AIADMK returned to power. "If MGR was the welfare agenda man, bordering on populism, much of Karunanidhi's politics focused on creating infrastructure", said political analyst TS Sudhir.

In his political career, he first received broader notice when he found a close friend and colleague in DMK founder CN Annadurai.

At the age of 14, M Karunanidhi entered politics.

On July 27, 1969, M. Karunanidhi was elected as the president of DMK. After Jayalalitha's death and Karunanidhi's demise, there will be a vacuum left in Tamil Nadu politics.
