Bologna Bridge Explosion Leaves 3 Dead, 70 Injured, Italian Police Say

Officials said they did not know yet what was in the truck's tanks, but Italian news agency ANSA reported it was liquefied petroleum gas.

A bridge that overlooks the Via Emilia also partially collapsed.

Italian media reported that numerous injured were hit by debris and glass after the explosion.

The windows of many houses were shattered by the explosion, ANSA also reported.

At least one person was killed and around 55 were injured, 14 seriously, according to local media.

The police blockaded the motorway in Bologna's Borgo Panigale area - where the blast occurred.

Videos of the blast site showed flames shooting up in the air, followed by a thick cloud of black smoke.

The accident closed down a key section of a major north-south highway that is heavily used year-round, but especially as Italy heads into next week's peak summer holiday travel period.

Video of the incident showed the tanker truck, which contained inflammable materials, slamming into the back of a lorry which had come to a halt because of heavy traffic.

Several people are believed to have been injured as well as two people dead.
