Ohio State coach Urban Meyer put on leave, investigation opened

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer put on leave, investigation opened

Victims simply do not get a fair shake when it comes to domestic violence cases.

Courtney Smith told Stadium and McMurphy that Shelley Meyer told her she was going to "have to tell Urban", which Courtney Smith agreed she should do.

"[De Fries] said, 'If you don't drop the charges, Zach will never coach again".

Brett McMurphy, a college football insider, best known for his work with ESPN, CBSSports.com, AOL FanHouse, The Tampa Tribune and The Odessa American, has claimed to have collected text messages that suggest Ohio State coach Urban Meyer knew of domestic abuse allegations against a member of his coaching staff back in 2015.

Ohio State has not yet commented on the report.

There's going to be a whole lot of discussion around this investigation and its potential implications over the next while, and it could definitely lead to major changes at Ohio State.

Ohio State may be in violation of Title IX, which states: discrimination on the basis of sex, can include sexual harassment, rape, and sexual assault. The university would owe nothing if Meyer were fired with cause.

Meyer's future is now uncertain in a franchise where scandal is nothing new.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Day will be the team's acting head coach during the investigation. Ohio State's first preseason practice is scheduled for Friday. The season starts September 1 with a game against Oregon State in Columbus, Ohio.

Meyer was head coach at Utah during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, leading the Utes to a 22-2 record and a Bowl Championship Series bid in 2004, where Utah beat Pittsburgh 35-7 in the Fiesta Bowl. He spent two seasons playing minor league baseball in the Braves organization before later playing defensive back at the University of Cincinnati. Smith returned home around 3 a.m. with a female co-worker, Meyer's secretary Amy Nicol, asking Courtney to let the co-worker stay the night.

The head coach claimed last week that he had no previous knowledge of the incident.

The career of one of the most prominent coaches in America is now in serious jeopardy.

Zach Smith was sacked in July after details of his alleged domestic abuses surfaced.

He continued to call the alleged abuse in the Smith household a "Zach and Courtney issue". Zach Smith was a graduate assistant on Meyer's Florida staff in 2009.

"[De Fries] said 'if you don't drop the charges, Zach will never coach again, '" Courtney said.

A week ago, Meyer fired Smith after it was learned that multiple instances of domestic violence were alleged between the Smith's, in both 2009 and 2015.

A few weeks later, Courtney Smith obtained a restraining order against her husband, and then filed for divorce. Smith was sacked last month after he was charged with criminal trespassing in relation to dropping his children off at his ex-wife's home against her wishes. A hearing to discuss the merits of her complaint was scheduled for Friday morning, but has been moved to September 14.

At Big Ten media day last week in Chicago, Meyer stood in front of reporters and said not only was he unaware of anything happening but it was all made up out of thin air.

A change in the police report for the domestic violence incident on October 26, 2015. "I now understand why Zach compartmentalized the info - to protect Urban", Koffel said. "Never anything came to light, never had a conversation about it", Meyer said on July 24.

"Courtney: "I hope urban is smarter than that" Lindsey: "[Urban] doesn't know what to think" Courtney: "I don't really care.
