Bhuyan said the indigenous people of the state should ever remain grateful to the participants of the Assam agitation, the Supreme Court and to NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela, his team and thousands of field workers who accomplished the mammoth task in such a dedicated manner.

"Those who can't prove their ancestral history in Assam prior to March 1971 (the formation of Bangladesh, when there were large flows of Bengali Muslim refugees into India) have now been deemed "illegal migrants" rather than "Indian citizens".

Two prominent world civil rights watch dogs, the Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have expressed concern that the citizenship identification exercise in Assam - rendering millions of people stateless - will complicate the situation.

"Under NRC, illegal immigrants are identified and a separate register of citizens should be made". Names of around 40.07 lakh applicants did not figure in the document.

The majority of those left out are Bengali speaking Muslims who have migrated to Assam at some juncture.

"The huge number of 40 lakh excluded will definitely come down and we hope that the claims and objections are checked impartially so that genuine citizens are not harassed", he added. "They won't. And we don't have a proper repatriation agreement with them either", Sharma told HuffPost India on Tuesdaywhile briskly giving directions to his small entourage on how to plan the rest of his day in Delhi.

The court posted the case for August 16 for further orders on timelines leading to the publication of the final NRC. We will not let this happen. Millions of people can not be thrown out of citizenship at a stroke.

While the NRC has attracted widespread criticism for the desperation it has sparked - in most cases among economically backward minorities in Assam - the issue of illegal immigrants has been a thorny one in the state's political narrative.
