The Nationals are reportedly listening to offers for Bryce Harper

The website added the Cleveland Indians have had regular talks about a possible Harper deal, but those discussions have not picked up any momentum.

But while trading Harper now makes baseball sense if the Nationals do not think they can sign him anyway, it would also represent a seismic emotional shift in this franchise's path. Word spread that the Washington Nationals were listening to offers for the six-time all-star, and slowly but surely, news trickled out that other teams might have legitimate interest.

Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post reports that one Major League Baseball team heard that the Nationals had a Bryce Harper trade "lined up", but the ownership pulled the plug. "I believe in this team".

If the Phillies were to get into a bidding war for Harper it's likely they'd offer a package similar to the one they offered Baltimore for Manny Machado. Jayson Stark reported last year's first round pick Adam Haseley, an outfielder in Double-A, would have been in a trade.

The Yankees, who traded for starting pitcher Lance Lynn Monday, have been heavily linked with Harper as a potential landing spot for him this offseason. The Nationals might not see a reason to tie up so much money in Harper when Robles, Soto, Eaton and Taylor are under team control for the foreseeable future. The Nationals are struggling just to stay in the playoff hunt at 52-53, 5 1/2 games back in both the NL East and the wild card.

A rival front office executive expressed shock to Rosenthal that the Nationals would actually trade Harper and said, "They're seeing if someone wants to go insane". That said, ownership does, you know, own the thing, and they have a different set of priorities sometimes.
