As chief content officer Ted Sarandos noted in a statement, the service's tally encompassed 40 titles, showcasing its "varied and expansive slate". Significantly, Game of Thrones, this year's most nominated show with 22 nominations, wasn't eligible last year, because HBO took their sweet time between seasons again.

The nominations for the 70th Primetime Emmys held a clear sign of how much the ground is shifting under the TV industry: streaming service Netflix captured the most nominations overall, 112, taking away a title that HBO held since 2001 and giving broadcast TV more reason to fear its future in awards and viewers. Meanwhile, HBO's Thrones and Westworld nabbed 22 and 21 nominations each, while the dark comedy Barry scored 13 nods.

The drama missed the awards in 2017 because of its production schedule but this year's nominations include nods for cast members Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage.
